Herbert’s history

Herbert is a town in southwest Saskatchewan, in the Rural Municipality of Morse No. 165. It sits on the Trans-Canada Highway, 48 km east of Swift Current and 197 km west of Regina. The town was named after the British diplomat Sir Michael Henry Herbert.

Today the Herbert Train Station Museum shares the history of the town and is open through the summer months. The Klassen Museum, dating from about 1916, was a Municipal Heritage Property on the Canadian Register of Historic Places.

Herbert is also known for the Herbert Stampede, a rodeo approved by the Canadian Cowboys Association, which named it Rodeo of the Year in 2008 and 2014. The event features a Wild Cow Race and the Wild West Parade. The town is the hometown of CBC Sports broadcaster Don Wittman and was also home to former senator Jack Wiebe.
